Centre spent over Rs 5.5 lakh crore on city in past 11 years: BJP

Thursday, 25 July 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva claimed that the central government has spent more than Rs. 5.5 lakh crore in the past 11 years on development projects or administrative expenses in the national Capital through budget allocations or special schemes, stating that it might be more than the total budget of the city government during this period.

Sachdeva said, “The budget has something for everyone and is a job-creating budget. However, Delhi's ministers have always falsely claimed that the central government has not provided anything for Delhi.” He claimed that while the Delhi Minister Atishi stated that the Modi government's budget has zero provisions for Delhi, she did not mention that thousands of crores of rupees have been allocated to Delhi under various heads.

“The Delhi government has been granted Rs 1168 crore as assistance. Additionally, Rs 11177.5 crore for Delhi Police, Rs. 4801.35 crore for pensions, and more than Rs. 30,000 crore for various central schemes have been provided,” he stated.

While criticising the Kejriwal government for making false promises of eliminating the garbage mountains by 2023, he stated, “The central government has allocated Rs. 1145 crore in the budget for the MCD to address this issue. Atishi accused the central government of reducing the health budget, but this year's health budget has been increased by 12.59 per cent, from Rs. 80517 crore to Rs. 90658 crore.” He added that the budget for all central government hospitals in Delhi, including AIIMS, has seen a nearly 10 per cent increase.

The Delhi BJP chief highlighted that the central government has spent Rs. 53000 crore on Delhi Metro, which transports 63 lakh people daily, compared to 25 lakh people who travel by DTC daily.

Additionally, Chandni Chowk MP Praveen Khandelwal dismissed Atishi's claims that Delhi received nothing in the budget while claiming that the budget is beneficial for all segments of society. “The fundamental goal of this budget is to make India a developed nation by 2047. For the first time in history, the MSME sector has been given significant importance, from small to large traders, with a focus on infrastructure development, employment, youth, and skilling,” he said.

He added that the budget also provides several benefits for women, including the establishment of working women's hostels and market access facilities for self-employed women. “This will be a boon for working women in Delhi,” Khandelwal stated.

The MP stated that to make Delhi traffic-free, the central government has spent Rs. 30,000 crore on the transport department, and an additional Rs. 35000 crore is in the working process. “However, Atishi continues to spread falsehood,” he alleged.

Sachdeva also pointed out that the central government has made significant investments in housing construction in Delhi NCR. “Still, it is unfortunate that the benefits of the PM Housing Scheme are not reaching the poor of Delhi because the Kejriwal government has not implemented it.  Similarly, the Delhi government has not implemented the Ayushman Bharat scheme for the poor, and neither Atishi nor any of her ministers have addressed this,” he alleged.
