Tuesday, 17 September 2024 | PNS | Ranchi

Since its establishment, the NML Pakri Barwadih Coal Mining Project has provided livelihoods for thousands of people and is transforming the lives of lakhs through its community development activities, At the same time, this project has made invaluable contributions to environmental conservation , enhancement, and sustainable development. Today, let you know the detailed information about the environmental conservation efforts of NML Pakri Barwadih coal mining project, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited.

Commitment towards Environmental Conservations

NML Pakri Barwadih continues to demonstrate its commitment to environmental protection through a series of comprehensive measures. The company adheres strictly to statutory regulations and has implemented a thorough environmental monitoring program to ensure the highest standards of ecological stewardship.

Air Quality Management

In its efforts to manage air quality and to control dust pollution, Pakri Barwadih has deployed over 30 mobile water tankers with capacities ranging from 10 KL to 80 KL. Fixed water sprinklers and mist sprayers have been installed at critical locations such as crushers and coal handling plants. Notably, the 80 KL water tanker, the largest in India, plays a crucial role in minimizing dust emissions. Additionally, coal transport trucks are covered with tarpaulins to further reduce dust.

Green Initiatives and Tree Plantation

Environmental initiatives at the project include the plantation of over 520,000 trees, employing the Miyawaki method to develop dense forests in smaller spaces. The project has also established a nursery that has produced over 200,000 saplings. PB-CMP organizes various environmental awareness programs, such as street plays and competitions, to engage and educate local communities. The company's active participation in state forest department events, including Van Mahotsav and Tree Raksha Bandhan, has led to a reduction of approximately 113,000 kg of CO2 emissions.

 Air Quality Monitoring

Air quality is rigorously monitored at multiple locations through accredited laboratories, and a Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System has been installed at the site office to ensure compliance with environmental standards.

Waste Water Management

Waste Water Management is another key area of focus. NML PB-CMP has installed a 200 KLD Effluent Treatment Plant and a 1.5 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant at the R&R Colony to treat wastewater, which is then reused for mining operations, plantation activities, and domestic purposes. Additional Sewage Treatment Plants utilizing MBBR technology, including a 20 KLD unit at the site office and a 300 KLD unit at the MDO Colony, further enhance wastewater treatment. The treated water supports horticulture and is not discharged externally.

Water Conservation Efforts

Apart from Waste Water Management by the project,Water conservation efforts at the project includes desilting village ponds and creating new ones. Rooftop rainwater harvesting systems at various facilities recharge approximately 148,796 m³/year of groundwater. Additionally, around 2.3 million m³ of rainwater is stored in the East quarry for dust suppression and other uses. Twelve check dams constructed in Pakwa and Khora Nala, with a combined storage capacity of 1.618 million m³, contribute an estimated 3.4052 million m³/year to groundwater recharge.

Investment in Environmental Conservation and Infrastructure

PBCMP's commitment to Environmental conservation is further understood by an investment of Rs 125.673 crore to assist the state government in preserving local flora and fauna and wildlife conservation. The company has also spent over Rs 80 crore on environmental protection initiatives around the Pakri Barwadih site. The coal transport system, featuring an elevated conveyor belt over 20 feet high, ensures safe wildlife passage, although this innovation has resulted in increased project costs.

Through these extensive efforts, NML Pakri Barwadih continues to lead by example in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
