The secrets to staying fit and fabulous: A Model’s guide to food and fitness

Friday, 20 September 2024 | Rachna Tiwari

As someone who has walked the runway, posed under studio lights, and worked through gruelling photo-shoots, I know firsthand that being a model isn't just about looking good; it's about staying healthy, strong, and confident. Whether you're an aspiring model or someone trying to maintain a fit lifestyle, what you eat and how you move plays a huge role in how you look and feel. And in a country like India, where food culture is rich and diverse, it's important to find the right balance between indulgence and discipline.

Here’s a breakdown of some key practices that have helped me maintain fitness while embracing Indian food traditions:

1. Eat Smart, Not Less

Starving yourself or following fad diets isn’t sustainable. Instead, focus on eating the right kinds of food. Models need to maintain lean muscle and energy throughout the day, and that means nourishing your body with nutrient-rich food.

·         Start your day with protein: A good breakfast sets the tone for your day. Indian options like boiled eggs, moong dal chilla, or even a paneer-stuffed whole wheat paratha are great for getting enough protein and healthy carbs.

·         Snack wisely: Replace unhealthy snacks like chips or sugary biscuits with almonds, walnuts, or fruit like apples or guavas. A bowl of yogurt with chia seeds or a handful of roasted makhanas (fox nuts) is a perfect option when you're on the go.

·         Balance your meals: Include whole grains like brown rice or millets, lean proteins (think fish, chicken, or legumes), and lots of fresh veggies. Try to avoid too much refined food like white bread or pasta.

·         Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate: This is one of the easiest ways to keep your skin glowing and your body functioning at its best. Carry a bottle of water with you and aim for at least 3 liters a day. You can also sip on coconut water or homemade chaas (buttermilk) for extra hydration and electrolytes.

2. Portion Control: Key to Indulgence

In India, we’re blessed with festivals and celebrations that revolve around food. So, how do you enjoy these without overdoing it?

·         Mind your portions: When at a family event or celebration, indulge in your favorite dishes but keep your portions small. Taste everything, but don't go for second helpings.

·         Control sugar intake: Indian sweets are delicious but loaded with sugar. Opt for desserts like a small piece of dark chocolate or baked rasgulla when cravings hit. If you must indulge, try to enjoy sweets made with jaggery or dates as a natural sweetener.

3. Fitness Routine: Consistency Over Intensity

Maintaining a model’s physique doesn’t mean you have to spend hours in the gym. What matters more is consistency.

·         Strength training is essential: You don’t need bulky muscles, but strength training helps in toning and defining your body. Incorporate bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups. Even using light dumbbells at home can be effective for toning arms and shoulders.

·         Focus on core strength: A strong core is key to good posture and a lean look. Try Pilates, yoga, or ab-focused exercises like planks and leg raises. Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) is a full-body workout that improves flexibility and core strength.

·         Don’t skip cardio: Cardio helps in burning calories and improving heart health. You don’t have to run marathons—try brisk walking, dancing, or a 30-minute jog. Even 20 minutes of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can do wonders.

·         Flexibility is vital: Stretching not only prevents injury but helps maintain the long, lean look models need. Dedicate 10 minutes post-workout to stretches or yoga poses that lengthen muscles.

4. Mindset Matters: Beauty from the Inside Out

In the modeling world, confidence is just as important as physical appearance. Here's how to stay balanced mentally:

·         Meditation and mindfulness: Modeling comes with stress—whether it's a long shoot or the pressure to look perfect. Take 10-15 minutes each day to meditate or practice deep breathing. It keeps you grounded and helps reduce anxiety.

·         Self-care routines: Pamper yourself regularly. Simple acts like applying a natural face mask (try turmeric and yogurt) or oiling your hair can do wonders for your mental well-being.

·         Sleep is non-negotiable: Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep every night. Your skin, hair, and overall health will reflect the benefits of proper rest. If you struggle with sleep, sip on a warm glass of turmeric milk before bed—it’s a traditional remedy for relaxation.

5. Sustainability and Long-Term Wellness

Remember, modeling is about long-term health, not short-term gains. Stay away from extreme diets or exercise fads that promise quick results but harm your body. Instead, focus on sustainable practices that you can maintain year-round.

·         Listen to your body: Some days, you might feel low on energy, and that’s okay. Don’t push yourself to the limit. Rest when needed and avoid overtraining.

·         Seek expert advice: If you're ever unsure about your diet or fitness plan, consult with a nutritionist or trainer who understands your body type and fitness goals.

The journey to maintaining a model’s physique is as much about discipline as it is about finding joy in the process. Embrace your unique beauty, stay consistent with your health routines, and always remember that true beauty comes from a body and mind that are both nourished and nurtured.

By following these tips, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—looking fabulous and feeling even better. Stay fit, stay fabulous!
