For Indians all that glitters is indeed gold!

Monday, 20 October 2025 | Editor’s take

We Indians have a fascination for gold that is timeless and unwavering. From birth till death, gold remains one of the most sought-after metals. Every occasion becomes a reason to buy gold — festivals, births, marriages, birthdays, anniversaries, and even for last rites; the yellow metal holds a place at every juncture of life. Economic hardships, financial constraints, and rising prices of gold — nothing can lower the charm of gold. Despite gold prices touching record highs of over `1.3 lakh per 10 grams, Indians once again proved that no price is too high when it comes to buying the yellow metal. This Dhanteras, jewellery stores across the country witnessed bustling crowds and brisk sales, reaffirming gold’s timeless place in India’s economic and cultural psyche; gold worth a lakh crores changed hands on this single day!

What makes this year remarkable is not just the price but the paradox it presents — as gold soars, so do the buyers. At one level, this phenomenon is deep-rooted in traditions. For millions of Indian households, buying gold on Dhanteras is more than a ritual — it is a reaffirmation of prosperity, stability, and faith in the future. The act of purchasing gold transcends material value; it is a symbolic gesture of security in uncertain times. And these are, indeed, uncertain times. But there is more to gold than just a matter of faith and tradition — it is a solid companion in times of crisis.

In the backdrop of global volatility, inflationary pressures, and a cautious domestic economic outlook, gold has re-emerged as the “safe haven” asset. With the yellow metal delivering returns of nearly 65 per cent over the past year and silver over 80 per cent, investors are treating gold not merely as ornamentation but as protection — a hedge against financial unpredictability.

The instinct is simple: when the ground feels shaky, hold on to what glitters. Interestingly, this year’s buying patterns reveal a shift in sentiment. Industry leaders note that bullion and coins — rather than jewellery — have led the surge. Gold has become both an emotional and financial insurance. The timing of the wedding season also adds fuel to the festive demand, ensuring that gold purchases retain their social function even as economic caution drives investment motives. Lightweight jewellery, coin buying, and a growing appetite for silver underline a pragmatic shift — Indians are not shying away from the metal but adapting to its rising value. The lesson from this glittering Dhanteras is clear: the shine of gold in India is not just cultural fixation; it is an investment to be passed on to the next generation.  For centuries, gold has been the people’s currency of trust — a form of wealth that transcends policy shifts, inflation, and even time. As India marches ahead in a volatile global economy, this year’s record Dhanteras sales serve as a reminder: while economies may fluctuate, the golden thread that ties tradition, trust, and financial prudence in Indian households remains unbroken. When confidence in markets wavers, the faith in gold becomes even stronger!
