From Bollywood stars to skincare bloggers, ice is the recommendation for the hour, says ABHI SINGHAL
When it comes to skincare trends that promise instant radiance without breaking the bank, ice facials are stealing the spotlight. Popularised by celebrities such as Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone, Kriti Sanon, Mouni Roy and Katrina Kaif , this frosty beauty ritual is rooted in simplicity and results. From calming puffiness to tightening pores, ice facials offer a quick, refreshing fix that appeals to both skincare minimalists and beauty enthusiasts.
So, what exactly is an ice facial? It involves applying ice cubes directly to the skin or using tools like ice rollers or frozen masks to massage the face. The cold constricts blood vessels, which reduces inflammation and puffiness. It also stimulates circulation as the skin rewarms, leading to a healthy glow and temporary firming effect. To the ones who should not try ice facials Dr Chandani Jain Gupta, MBBS & MD- Dermatologist & Aesthetic Physician, Elantis Healthcare suggested, “Sensitive skin, broken capillaries, and extremely dry skin must not be subjected to ice facials because cold may irritate or flare-up the skin.†Experts agree that cold therapy has a long-standing place in beauty routines. “It’s one of the easiest and most effective ways to refresh tired-looking skin,†say skincare professionals. The science supports this too. Icing can help soothe acne-prone skin, reduce oiliness, and even aid lymphatic drainage when done properly.
Celebrities swear by this icy technique. Alia Bhatt reportedly begins her day by rubbing ice on her face, while Katrina Kaif uses chilled rose water ice cubes for a double dose of hydration and toning.
What’s more, ice facials aren’t restricted to just plain cubes. People now experiment with frozen green tea, aloe vera juice, cucumber water, and even coffee for additional benefits like antioxidants, hydration, and de-puffing. However, dermatologists caution that ice should never be applied directly for too long. Wrapping it in a thin muslin cloth or using an ice roller ensures the skin is protected while still reaping the benefits. “Usage of frozen natural components like green tea, aloe vera, and cucumber is generally safe and works well in calming, de-puffing, and refreshing the skin, as long as done moderately and under clean preparation.†said Dr Chandani.
Like all skincare trends, moderation is key. Overuse can lead to skin irritation or broken capillaries. But done right, an ice facial can be a cool addition to your beauty routine — no filters needed.
More Than Chill
Icing can soothe inflammation, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin by calming redness and swelling. It also aids in controlling excess oil production, which can prevent future acne flare-ups. Moreover, the practice can
improve the absorption of skincare products, as the cold helps to constrict capillaries, allowing active ingredients to penetrate more effectively. However, it’s essential to avoid direct application of ice to the skin; instead, wrap it in a soft cloth to prevent potential frostbite or irritation. Incorporating ice facials into your skincare routine can be a cost-effective way to achieve a radiant complexion.
