The police imposed a fine of `23.8 lakh on 238 house owners and individuals under Section 83 of the Police Act for failing to verify their tenants, domestic help and other outsiders in Dehradun district.

The extensive verification drive began early on Sunday morning, covering both urban and rural areas of the district. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that all police station in-charges were instructed to conduct large-scale verification of outsiders, tenants and domestic workers residing in their respective jurisdictions.

In compliance with these instructions, the police verified the identities of a total of 2,743 individuals across various police station areas in the district on Sunday. During the drive, police summoned 214 suspicious individuals to the police stations for questioning and physical verification.

The police teams also took action under Section 81 of the Police Act against 177 people who violated regulations, collecting fines totalling `44,250. Police also seized six two-wheelers found in suspicious or abandoned conditions and brought them to the police station as unclaimed property.

The SSP said that these drives mark a significant step toward controlling criminal activity and ensuring the safety of residents by maintaining updated records of people living or working in the area.

Since January, the police have verified about 6,000 people during this door to door campaign across the Dehradun district. Such verification campaigns will continue regularly to enhance law and order in the district, he added.
