Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the national standards body of India, is involved in Standardisation activity both at national and internation level. BIS represents India in standardization activities of international bodies namely International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electro Technical Committee (IEC).
This year’s 89th IEC General Body Meeting of IEC is being hosted by India from 14th September 2025 to 19 September 2025. Bureau of Indian Standards, being the national standards body of India is organising this event which involves various activities such as Seminars, Workshops, Exhibitions and Exposure visits.
Accordingly, the delegates representing various countries from different part of the world visited Central Laboratory, Sahibabad on 18 September 2025.
During their visit, were given an in-depth tour of the state-of-the-art testing infrastructure of BIS’s largest laboratory, which continues to set benchmarks in quality assurance and standardisation.
The delegates were given firsthand exposure of how the Central Laboratory functions not only as a comprehensive testing hub catering to over 800
Indian Standards, but also as a centre for capacity building, nurturing students through the internship program and engaging young minds via Standards Clubs.
Mrs. Nishat Haque, DDGL, addressed the gathering and elaborated the importance of laboratories in implementation of standards for the benefits and safety of consumers, Further, she highlighted the pivotal role of laboratories in fostering knowledge and expertise.
She emphasised upon the initiatives such as capacity building programs, exposure visits, Manak Manthan, conclaves, and other recent endeavours, which have significantly strengthened the outreach of BIS activities among various stakeholders especially the academia and industry.
Mr. K. V. Rao, Head (CL), extended a warm welcome to the delegates and showcased specialized facilities, including the Toy Testing Laboratory, RAL Laboratory, Geyser Testing Laboratory, and home appliances while also sharing the laboratory’s future expansion plans to further enhance its testing capabilities.
The delegateshave also interacted with the interns currently engaged with Central Laboratory, Engineering students at MoU Institute, and Students of Standard club at Schools. In the interaction, the delegates were informed about the role of BIS in fostering the quality consciousness in the young minds of India.
The visit concluded with fruitful exchanges of ideas and perspectives between BIS officials and the IEC GM delegates.
These interactions provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of testing and quality infrastructure across different countries, fostering a spirit of collaboration and mutual learning.
