Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Monday, marking a fresh chapter in India-Canada relations after a turbulent phase. The two leaders emphasised the importance of strengthening cooperation across sectors including trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and people-to-people connections.
The meeting took place in New Delhi, where Foreign Minister Anand arrived on Sunday evening as part of her official visit to three Asian nations — India, China, and Singapore. Her discussions with Indian leadership signal a renewed momentum in bilateral engagement.
According to an official readout from the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi recalled his visit to Canada earlier this year during the G7 Summit held at Kananaskis, Alberta. At the summit, he had an “extremely productive” meeting with newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. PM Modi extended his warm regards to Carney and expressed optimism about future engagements between the two nations.
The visit and accompanying dialogue signify a major thaw in bilateral ties, which had reached a historic low in 2023.
