During high-level talks held in New Delhi, the Chinese delegation led by Foreign Minister Wang Yi raised the issue of Taiwan. Responding to the remarks, the Indian side firmly reaffirmed that its position on Taiwan remains unchanged. India emphasised that, consistent with the approach adopted by much of the international community, it maintains economic, technological and cultural ties with Taiwan — a practice that will continue. Indian officials further noted that China itself engages with Taiwan in these same non-political spheres, highlighting the pragmatic nature of such interactions. The exchange was part of a broader diplomatic dialogue ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, where a wide range of regional and bilateral issues were discussed.
In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated, “The Chinese side raised the issue of Taiwan. The Indian side underlined that there was no change in its position on this issue. It pointed out that, like the rest of the world, India had a relationship with Taiwan that focuses on economic, technological and cultural ties and that this would continue.”
