The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday stepped up its attack on the BJP, reminding it of yet another unfulfilled election promise, free LPG cylinders to women on Holi and staged protest demonstrations across 40 locations in the national capital.
With the BJP's earlier pledge of Rs 2,500 for women proving to be a "jumla", Aam Aadmi Party leaders, including senior leader and former MLA Rituraj Jha and former Delhi Mayor Dr Shelly Oberoi-led demonstrations demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliver on his commitments.
A large number of women joined the demonstrations, carrying empty cylinders as a symbol of the BJP's broken promises. As the demonstrations intensified, Delhi Police detained Rituraj Jha and several AAP workers while they raised slogans urging the BJP government in Delhi to fulfil its promise and provide free LPG refills.
Senior AAP leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly Atishi took pot-shots at the BJP and Prime Minister for failing to deliver on their promises to Delhi's women before the elections.
She said, "The BJP's promise of giving Rs 2,500 to women by March 8 turned out to be a 'jumla' and a betrayal. Modi also made a second promise, to give one free LPG cylinder to every woman on Holi and Diwali."
"With just two days left for Holi, they are wondering whether they will receive a free cylinder or if, like the Rs 2,500, this too will turn out to be another 'jumla'. Women across Delhi have been staging demonstrations against the BJP, carrying empty LPG cylinders to highlight the unfulfilled promise," said Atishi.
On Wednesday, when AAP leaders and workers gathered at ITO to remind the BJP of its pledge to provide free LPG cylinders on Holi, Delhi Police detained them, party said.
Meanwhile, at Mandir Marg, former Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi and Aam Aadmi Party workers held a demonstration, demanding that the BJP fulfil its election pledges. Similar demonstrations were held in Kalkaji, Sangam Vihar and other parts of Delhi.
