Doctors at Bokaro General Hospital (BGH) successfully saved a critically injured man who suffered severe facial and head injuries from a sword attack. The patient, Raj Mahtha, was brought to the hospital on February 25, 2025, with his face split into three parts and deep wounds on his neck and head, struggling to breathe.
A medical team led by Dr. Aninda Mandal acted swiftly, performing emergency resuscitation and a seven-hour surgery to stop the bleeding. Due to airway obstruction, an ENT team conducted a tracheostomy to restore breathing. The patient was then shifted to the critical care unit (CCU), where doctors worked to prevent lung infection caused by internal bleeding.
On March 6, 2025, a team of plastic surgeons reconstructed the patient’s facial bones, nose, lips, and cheeks in another seven-hour operation. The collaborative efforts of surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff played a crucial role in his recovery.
BGH’s teamwork training at IIM Kozhikode, as part of SAIL’s initiatives, was credited for enhancing coordination in critical surgeries. Dr. Vibhuti Karunamay, the in-charge chief medical officer, also supported these improvements.
Raj Mahtha, now stable, is set to be discharged on Tuesday. Expressing gratitude, he said, "The doctors have given me a new life." His father, Prakash Mahtha, acknowledged the hospital's efforts, emphasizing the importance of timely medical intervention.
