The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has revoked Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region (NCR) on Sunday, following a noticeable improvement in Delhi’s air quality. The decision was taken after the Air Quality Index (AQI) for the city was recorded at 179 on Saturday — placing it in the ‘Moderate’ category.
The CAQM Sub-Committee for GRAP met to review the situation and cited improved weather conditions, including strong surface winds and light rain, as the key contributors to the recent drop in pollution levels. Forecasts by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) also predict the AQI will remain in the ‘Moderate’ category over thecoming days.
Stage-I of GRAP had been in effect since May 16 to curb rising pollution levels. With the air quality showing consistent signs of improvement, the committee decided to withdraw the restrictions with immediate effect. However, the Commission has cautioned all agencies under the Delhi Government and adjoining NCR states to continue strict implementation of existing rules, guidelines, and directives to sustain the current air quality levels. Agencies have also been directed to focus on dust mitigation and adhere to targeted actions outlined in CAQM’s comprehensive pollution control policy.
The Commission emphasised that while Stage-I actions are being lifted, efforts must continue to prevent a slide back into the ‘Poor’ category. The situation will be monitored closely, and further measures will be taken if necessary, based on air quality trends and meteorological forecasts.
This decision offers temporary relief but also reinforces the importance of sustained efforts in combating air pollution across Delhi-NCR. Stage-1 of GRAP focuses on cutting pollution at its source, especially from dust, vehicles, and industrial emissions. Under this stage, 27 preventive actions are strictly implemented by all relevant agencies. These include use of anti-smog guns, water sprinkling, dust suppression measures in road construction, repair projects and maintenance activities
