The Delhi Police Crime Branch has successfully prevented a potential gang war in the city by arresting two key members of the infamous Sunny Sai gang.
The arrests, made early Saturday morning, led to the seizure of powerful guns and ammunition. Police believe the duo was planning to start a major conflict.
The arrested men have been identified as 27-year-old Sukhpreet also known as ‘Mafia,’ and 25-year-old Shamshad Ali also known as ‘Pahalwan.’ Both have a long history of serious crimes, including murder, armed robbery, and extortion. They had been out of jail on bail for about two months.
Their arrest was the result of a special operation by the Crime Branch’s Anti-Gang Squad (AGS).
Acting on reliable information, a police team led by Inspector Krishan Kumar of the AGS arrested the two men in the Raghubir Nagar area. A powerful pistol with two live bullets was found on Shamshad Ali, while a loaded single-shot pistol was seized from Sukhpreet. A case has been filed against them under the Arms Act, and the investigation is ongoing.
Police sources say the Sunny Sai gang has a long-standing rivalry with the Salam Tyagi and Saddam Gauri gangs. The gang’s leader, Sunny Sai, is currently in Meerut Jail. Police believe that Sukhpreet and Shamshad Ali were getting ready to attack a rival gang to show their power.
Sukhpreet, who dropped out of school in the 9th grade, got involved with criminals in 2019.
He was first arrested after a fight at a PVR cinema. His criminal activities grew after he joined the Sunny Sai gang. In 2020, he and his group shot a bookmaker named Shanki, who was connected to the rival Gori gang, to establish their dominance.
Shamshad Ali also left school early. He began working with liquor dealers in Bahadurgarh and had been arrested before for crimes related to alcohol. In 2023, he was arrested for stealing 38 gold bars from a person on a scooter. While in jail, he met Sukhpreet, and after their release, they started working for the Sunny Sai gang.
The two men reportedly had a major fight with a rival gang about a month ago. They allegedly bought illegal weapons to “teach them a lesson.” Their arrest has stopped a possible gang-related bloodbath in the city. Both men were brought to court and are currently in police custody. The Crime Branch is now working to uncover the entire criminal network and its connections. The investigation is ongoing.
