The Election Commission of India on Thursday announced three new initiatives to enhance accuracy of electoral rolls and make voting easier and more accessible for citizens.
These initiatives were envisioned by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar during the March 2025 conference of Chief Electoral Officers. Election Commissioners Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr Vivek Joshi were also present at the meeting where these reforms were finalised.
The Commission will now receive electronic death registration data from the Registrar General of India. This will enable Electoral Registration Officers to remove deceased voters from rolls more accurately and promptly.
Booth Level Officers can verify the updated information during field visits without waiting for formal Form 7 requests. This step ensures cleaner rolls and reduces delays in processing voter data.
To make Voter Information Slips more user-friendly, the design will be improved. Voter serial numbers and part numbers will now be larger and clearer, aiding both voters and poll officials.
The Commission has also directed that all BLOs be issued standard photo identity cards. This move, under Section 13B(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, aims to build voter trust.
Since BLOs are the first interface between voters and the Commission during door-to-door campaigns, the ID cards will ensure they are easily identifiable and approachable.
