At least three lives were lost in separate cases of a fire and a building collapse across the Capital on Monday. While a late-night blaze in North-East Delhi’s Nand Nagri claimed the lives of two men, including a resident and a vagabond, an 8-year-old boy lost his life and another was injured when a portion of a two storey building collapsed in West Delhi’s Nangloi area, police said.
Meanwhile, a fire broke out in the signalling room of the Trilokpuri Sanjay Lake Metro station (Pink Line) in the national Capital on Monday, leading to disruptions in Metro operation in the Pink line, Delhi Fire Service officials said. No casualties reported in the incident.
A Delhi Metro official stated that train services on Line-7 of the Pink Line (between Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar) were regulated on a small stretch since 11:20 am on Monday after smoke was detected in one of the technical rooms at the Trilok Puri Sanjay Lake Metro station. Train services were regulated due to the disturbance in the signalling/AFC system at the station.
Another incident occurred late on the night of Sunday at Tahirpur Kodi colony in Dilshad Garden. At approximately 11:39 pm, Nand Nagri police station received information about a fire breaking out on the ground floor of a house located in Gali Shamshan Wali. Emergency teams, including local police and Delhi Fire Services personnel, were immediately dispatched to the spot.
Once the fire was brought under control by fire tenders, two bodies were discovered inside the building. The deceased were identified as Shashi, 25, a resident of the house and Ballu, approximately 55 years old, described as a vagabond who had taken shelter at the premises.
Initial investigations revealed that the fire originated due to a short circuit that occurred while two e-rickshaws were being charged on the premises. The ground floor of the house was reportedly being used for e-rickshaw charging, and the two vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.
The Crime Team and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) were called to examine the site. Police have registered a case under Sections 106(1) and 287 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with causing death due to negligence and negligent conduct with respect to machinery. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to determine the exact cause of death.
On Monday, another tragic event unfolded in Nangloi’s Indira Camp, located in Prem Nagar, where a portion of a dilapidated building collapsed, killing an eight-year-old boy and injuring another person. The incident occurred around 7 am, when a section of the building suddenly gave way.
Emergency responders, including fire brigade units, police teams, and ambulances, reached the site and began rescue operations.
The boy was trapped under the debris and was pulled out in critical condition. He was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Another individual was rescued from the rubble and is undergoing treatment.
Locals in the area claimed that the building was in a visibly poor condition and had shown signs of structural weakness. According to them, repeated complaints had been made to civic authorities about the unsafe state of the premises, but no corrective measures were taken. The building is believed to be several decades old and had been weakened further due to recent pre-monsoon weather.
Officials from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the police have initiated a probe into the matter. The area has been cordoned off, and surrounding structures are being assessed for stability as a precautionary measure.
Investigation is underway in both the incidents.
