Garhwa district in Jharkhand has been awarded Rs 3 crore by the NITI Aayog. The district topped the NITI Aayog's performance index for aspirational districts. This award recognises the district's outstanding performance in agriculture and water resources management.
The NITI Aayog's Aspirational Districts Programme aims to improve development in lagging districts across India. The programme monitors districts in five key areas: education, health and nutrition, infrastructure, agriculture and water resources, financial inclusion and skill development. Districts that perform well receive additional funding to help them develop further.
Garhwa district showed significant improvement in all five areas compared to February 2024. The district's progress in agriculture and water resources was particularly impressive. Garhwa climbed to second place in this sector in March 2024, after being ranked 26th in February 2024.
Deputy Commissioner Shekhar Jamuar said, "This is a proud moment for Garhwa district. This award shows the hard work of the district administration and the people's positive attitude towards development. We will use the prize money to improve the lives of people in the area." The Deputy Commissioner of Garhwa said that the district has been allocated ₹3 crore for the development of agricultural and water resources infrastructure in the Aspirational Block. The district administration has already prepared a project proposal and submitted it to the NITI Aayog.
The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted that the district had received ₹3 crore in 2023-24 under the Aspirational Districts Programme for basic infrastructure development. This funding is being used to construct changing rooms, toilets, and goalposts at various sports grounds built under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
The Deputy Commissioner congratulated the district administration team for their hard work and dedication, stating that the achievement is a testament to their commitment to transparency and development. The success has brought recognition to Garhwa district at the state and national level.
