The Delhi Government will repair 500-km-long stretches of roads across the national Capital by March 2026, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma said on Monday. The Minister made an inspection visit in South Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar and Amar Colony areas along with local MLAs and PWD officials.
“By March, the Delhi Government will repair 500 kilometres of major road stretches across the national Capital, and tenders are being floated. The broken roads, slip roads, footpaths and Foot Overbridges (FOBs) are also being repaired,” Verma said while talking to reporters.
Government sources said that every year the city suffers from air pollution during winter, and one of the factors contributing to the pollution is the dust generated on roads by moving vehicles. Considering this a serious concern, the PWD and other agencies have been ensuring the repair of existing roads, besides constructing new ones.
Earlier this year, under the road dust mitigation plan, Verma held a meeting with PWD officials, where the status of 153 ongoing road repair projects was reviewed.
The Minister had asked officials to expedite the works in a time-bound manner.
Last month, the Central Government had approved Rs 803 crore for Delhi to take up road infrastructure-related projects. The funds were approved under the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF). Sources in the Government said that various roads and stretches measuring 170 kilometres in total are being developed and maintained with the help of this fund. The concerned departments have released tenders for several stretches.
Tendering has already been done for several other stretches for the repair and maintenance, as the departments concerned have been improving the condition of roads measuring 200 kilometres in another phase. This is also a part of the earlier announcement made by the PWD Minister, in which he has informed that the condition of 500 kilometres of roads in the national Capital will be improved.
The Government has also informed that the complete repair, maintenance and development of nearly 170 kilometres of roads will be completed before the monsoon season. “The Government, after taking the oath, had decided to focus on 500 kilometres of roads in the Capital. All concerned departments have assigned their task to achieve the target in a time-bound manner.
