Hemant Khandelwal elected as Madhya Pradesh BJP President

Wednesday, 02 July 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Hemant Vijay Khandelwal has been unanimously elected as the new president of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His unopposed selection marks a significant moment for the party, highlighting both its internal discipline and strategic clarity ahead of future political challenges. The decision came after several rounds of internal consultation and was formally sealed in Bhopal in the presence of Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who acted as the central observer for the process.

Khandelwal, a two-time MLA from Betul and former Member of Parliament, was considered a surprise choice by many, but his clean image, strong RSS background, and general-category identity made him a natural fit for the role. Sources within the BJP confirmed that both the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav played key roles in backing his candidature. His appointment is being viewed as a strategic move to maintain a balance within the party, ensuring the representation of traditional ideological forces while aligning with the current leadership’s governance style.

This transition also brings to an end the tenure of outgoing president VD Sharma, who held the post for over five years. Unlike earlier speculations about multiple contenders and possible factional contests, the leadership’s decision to back Khandelwal ensured that the process remained smooth, disciplined, and unanimous. Political observers see this development as a calculated step by the BJP to present a unified face in Madhya Pradesh, especially as it prepares for upcoming electoral and organizational milestones.

Born in Mathura in 1964, Khandelwal is a law graduate and a businessman by profession. He first entered Parliament in 2008 after winning the Betul bypoll, following the death of his father, senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Khandelwal. He later served as an MLA from Betul in 2013 and returned to the assembly in 2023. With no criminal record and assets worth over Rs 41 crore, he brings to the position both credibility and administrative experience.

Hemant Khandelwal’s elevation is being interpreted within party circles as a lesson in discipline and coordination. The BJP’s central leadership appears to have sent a strong message that consensus-building and organizational loyalty will remain core principles in its functioning. His appointment is likely to strengthen the BJP’s structure in Madhya Pradesh and energize its cadre in the run-up to future political battles.
