Amid growing concerns over drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Sunday reiterated his government’s resolve to intensify the campaign against narcotics, calling for united efforts to keep the youth away from addiction. The Chief Minister was speaking at the closing ceremony of the Virbhadra Singh Memorial Pro-Boxing International Championship, held at the historic Ridge in Shimla.
Lauding the organizers of the championship, which featured professional boxers from India and Russia, Sukhu said that the event served not just as a tribute to the six-time former Chief Minister Raja Virbhadra Singh but also as a powerful platform to promote a drug-free Himachal. “Our anti-drug campaign is receiving encouraging support from young people across the state. We will now take it forward with greater intensity and adopt a zero-tolerance policy towards drug mafias,†he said.
Highlighting recent government initiatives, Sukhu said that his administration had taken several concrete steps to steer youth toward sports and constructive engagement. “We have significantly increased the prize money for medal winners in international events and ensured that athletes participating in state, national, and international competitions are not penalized for attendance. These reforms are aimed at encouraging youth to choose sports over substance abuse,†he added.
Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh, son of the late Virbhadra Singh, echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiments. He emphasized that the championship was designed not only to honour his father’s legacy but also to spread awareness about the perils of drug addiction. “My father always envisioned a progressive and healthy Himachal. We are committed to realizing that vision by creating avenues that empower our youth,†said Vikramaditya.
Earlier, the championship was inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, who underscored the critical role of sports in countering drug abuse. “A healthy youth means a strong nation. Sports build character, discipline, and mental strength. When young people engage in athletics, they stay away from drugs and stay on the right path,†the Governor remarked. He raised alarm over the rising drug menace in Himachal and questioned: “Will Himachal remain the Dev Bhoomi or become a land of addiction?†Calling it a collective responsibility, he urged every citizen to contribute to safeguarding the state’s future.
The Governor also lauded the efforts of Public Works Minister Vikramaditya Singh and the Himachal Pradesh Professional Boxing Association for organizing the event under the theme ‘Say No to Drugs – Say Yes to Sports’. “Such initiatives inspire our youth and send a clear message of hope, discipline, and resistance against substance abuse,†he added.
Indian boxer Yashpal emerged victorious in the final bout, bringing pride to the nation and reinforcing the event’s message of resilience and focus. The championship featured 10 professional boxers — five each from India and Russia.
