IAS K Siva Prasad Seeks Voluntary Retirement

Tuesday, 21 January 2025 | PNS | Chandigarh

K Siva Prasad, a senior IAS officer of the 1993 Punjab cadre and currently serving as the Additional Chief Secretary to the Punjab Governor, has sought voluntary retirement from service (VRS). The Punjab Government has accepted his request for VRS, and his file has been forwarded to the Central Government’s Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for final approval.

If the Centre grants the request, he will be relieved from his duties earlier than expected, with his original retirement date set for 2030.

This marked the second time Prasad has requested premature retirement. The first instance occurred during the tenure of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, when he had sought to step down but was persuaded to continue in service at that time.

Prasad’s current decision comes despite efforts by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who reportedly asked him to reconsider. However, Prasad has decided to proceed with his retirement application.

In addition to his current role as Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor, Prasad also holds the position of Financial Commissioner for Rural Development and Panchayats in Punjab Government.

Known for his commitment to governance, Prasad has been instrumental in various administrative functions within the State.

Aside from his career in the civil services, Prasad has a strong interest in spirituality and philosophy. He has recently authored a book titled ‘Gita Acharan – A Beginner’s Perspective’, which explores the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita and their relevance in modern-day life. The book, available in English, Hindi, and Punjabi, has been well-received for its approachable style and insights. It is reported that Prasad intends to dedicate more time to his literary and spiritual pursuits after retirement.

Prasad’s connection to politics has also been a topic of speculation, as he is a relative of the late GMC Balayogi, a former Lok Sabha Speaker and leader of the Telugu Desam Party. While there has been no confirmation regarding his entry into politics, his background and associations have fueled such discussions.

During his tenure in Punjab, Prasad was appointed Additional Chief Secretary to the Governor by former Governor Banwarilal Purohit. He replaced Rakhee Gupta Bhandari in 2022, assuming significant responsibilities in governance.
