Development Minister Kapil Mishra, on Saturday chaired a high-level meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to address the persistent traffic congestion at Khajuri Chowk, a key traffic junction in North-East Delhi.

The meeting was convened in response to the growing traffic issues in the area and the daily inconvenience faced by commuters and the general public.

Khajuri Chowk connects densely populated areas such as Wazirabad, Signature Bridge, Bhajanpura, Shastri Park, and Karawal Nagar. The junction witnesses thousands of vehicles every day, often leading to long and disruptive traffic jams. These bottlenecks not only delay daily travel but also obstruct critical emergency services like ambulances and fire vehicles.

Senior officials from major departments, including the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Delhi Traffic Police, Public Works Department (PWD), and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), were present at the meeting. The primary objective was to develop a coordinated and practical action plan for easing congestion at this vital traffic node.

Opening the meeting, Mishra emphasised that “ensuring smooth traffic movement for Delhi’s citizens is a top priority, and all relevant departments have to work in close coordination to implement effective solutions at Khajuri Chowk.”

Major points discussed in the meeting were deployment of additional traffic personnel to better manage vehicle flow.

; exploring road widening options and assessing the feasibility of underpasses or flyovers, creating dedicated lanes for autos, buses, and private vehicles, developing alternate routes and implementing a strategic traffic diversion plan and promoting the use of metro and public transport to reduce dependency on private vehicles.

All the officials present in the meeting agreed that the traffic problem can be solved effectively not only through engineering solutions but also through better coordination, use of technology and awareness campaigns.

At the end of the meeting, Mishra directed all the departments to coordinate and solve the problem of the traffic jam within the stipulated time frame. He also assured that the Delhi Government is fully committed to strengthening the traffic system and will take every necessary step in this direction.

According to locals, unruly e rickshaws and autos,  lack of presence of traffic police and encroachment on Wazirabad road are the main reasons for traffic jams. This is one of the major bottlenecks of north east Delhi, connecting Kashmiri Gate, Gandhi Nagar and Delhi University.
