MP facing water crisis due to BJP Govt’s failure: Congress

Saturday, 19 April 2025 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee’s Media Department Chairman Mukesh Nayak has issued a scathing statement holding the BJP-led state government responsible for the worsening water crisis in the state. He said the situation has now engulfed both urban and rural areas, leaving millions struggling for access to drinking water, a basic human necessity.

In his press statement, Nayak accused the state government of mismanagement, corruption, and apathy, calling it the root cause of this grave crisis. He stated that the BJP government has pushed the people of Madhya Pradesh into this man-made disaster with its inaction and hollow promises. “This is not a crisis that can be resolved with paperwork and slogans. It demands concrete action and accountability—both of which are missing under the current regime,” he said.

Highlighting distressing reports from across the state, Nayak pointed to the dire situation in the Ichhawar assembly constituency, the home turf of Revenue Minister Karan Singh Verma, where villagers are facing severe water shortages. “It is shocking that even a minister's constituency is grappling with basic water access. What hope can the rest of the state have?” he questioned. He further criticized former Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s long 18-year tenure, stating that even during that time, many villages in such constituencies failed to receive fundamental water infrastructure.

The situation is worse in Jaitpur village, just five kilometers from Tendukheda Tehsil, where over 500 residents wait in long queues at hand pumps or travel far to fetch water from farms. Women are forced to begin their day at dawn just to secure drinking water, affecting their health and livelihood. Despite the Nal Jal Yojana being launched with promises of change, the water taps in the village are dry, making the scheme nothing more than a symbolic structure that exists only on paper.

In Bisan Khedi village of Sehore district, a resident was forced to crawl to the Divisional Commissioner’s office to draw attention to the severity of the crisis. “This deeply disturbing incident reflects the insensitivity of the government. Is this what people in Madhya Pradesh must do to get basic water access?” Nayak asked. He said the incident is symbolic of a larger failure where the government refuses to listen, and people are driven to extreme measures just to be heard.

In Mendha village of Betul district, under the Jal Jeevan Mission, tap connections were installed but not a single drop of water has been delivered through them in the last two years. Villagers continue to risk their lives fetching water from wells. Nayak said this clearly exposes how central schemes like Jal Jeevan Mission have failed in Madhya Pradesh, serving as nothing more than a bureaucratic formality with no tangible results.
