National Creativity Olympiad begins with call to ‘Think Beyond the Classroom’

Sunday, 20 April 2025 | PNS | Jamshedpur

The Institution of Engineers (India), Jamshedpur Local Centre inaugurated the National Creativity Olympiad (NCO) 2025 in a vibrant ceremony held on Saturday morning at the SNTI Auditorium, Bistupur. The event commenced at 9:00 AM with an auspicious Ganesh Vandana performed by  Reena Bhattacharjee, setting a graceful tone for the day.

The inaugural function saw the presence of distinguished guests, participants from across the country, and members of the engineering and academic community.  Satish Kr Tiwary, Chief of Mechanical Maintenance at Tata Steel and a key member of the IEI Jamshedpur Local Centre, delivered the welcome address. He offered insights into the legacy and role of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the impactful activities of the Jamshedpur Local Centre.

The Chairman of NCO 2025,  N Rajesh Kumar, briefed the gathering about the objectives and structure of the Olympiad, highlighting its aim to foster innovation, out-of-the-box thinking, and scientific temperament among school students.

The highlight of the inauguration was the inspiring address by Chief Guest  Pragya Singh, Principal of DAV Public School, Bistupur, whose words resonated deeply with students and educators alike.  Singh emphasized that innovation is not bound by formal qualifications, recalling how inventions—from the discovery of fire to modern conveniences like touch-activated showers—stemmed from human curiosity and necessity.

"Necessity is the mother of invention," she reiterated, citing examples of innovations that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the transition from chalkboards to digital screens in classrooms. She encouraged students to use their leisure time creatively and underscored the importance of continually upgrading oneself in today’s fast-changing world. “Just like mobile devices need frequent reboots due to rapid software updates, humans too must evolve constantly,” she remarked.

This year’s NCO has drawn 24 school teams from across India, making it a truly national event. Participating schools have come from diverse locations such as Pithoragarh (Uttarakhand), Guwahati (Assam), Puri and Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Kanpur and Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh), Patna (Bihar), Durgapur (West Bengal), Ranchi and Jamshedpur (Jharkhand), among others.

The vote of thanks was presented by  T Thirumurugan, Honorary Secretary of the Jamshedpur Local Centre, who expressed gratitude to the guests, participants, organizers, and volunteers for making the inaugural ceremony a grand success.
