New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), vice chairman Kuljeet Singh Chahal on Saturday inaugurated two day Mango Festival — “Khaas-ye-Aam”, at the Palika Services Officers’ Institute (PSOI), Vinay Marg, Chanakyapuri.
Chahal informed that various mango research institutions are participating in this mango festival. A representative of the research institute has said in the next few days a special breed of mango will be developed and will be named as “Sindoor” in the memory of Operation Sindoor.
He said the NDMC Mango Festival serves as a vibrant platform for empowering farmers, promoting agri-innovation, and celebrating India’s agricultural diversity. By bringing together over 500 mango varieties from across the nation, and providing direct exposure to farmer societies, research institutes, and vendors, the festival embodies the spirit of self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and highlights NDMC’s commitment to inclusive growth and farmer-centric development.
After the inauguration, Chahal said this mango festival is being organized by NDMC is such a confluence where 515 types of mangoes have been displayed in the festival which have been grown by farmers of different states in India. NDMC in its first effort of mango festival, has provided a unique platform to the farmers, where they can exhibit their mangoes and their products.
Chahal said that apart from the displaying of 515 mangoes, mangoes of many countries have also been shown here. Some of the hybrid varieties are also being displayed in the mango festival which are grown form the North India and South India varieties. This Mango Festival has emerged as a symbol of unity in diversity of India. Centre attraction of the Mango Festival is a 2.5 Kg mango- Raja Wala, he added.
While inaugurating a competition for the best mango variety among the mangoes displayed here from various places in India, he said in the coming years, it will be our endeavour to contact all the embassies based in New Delhi to showcase the varieties of mangoes which are grown in their countries.
About 515 varieties of mangoes displayed by the two government Mango Research Institutes, and the mango growers/farmer societies, 25 mango sellers/vendors will set up their stalls for selling of mango products at the festival.
Government Research Institutions ICAR- CISH Lucknow is displaying around 250 varieties with leading varieties like Dashehari, Langra, Chausa, Mallika, Amrapali, Amiga, Arunica and other several varieties and hybrids. ICAR- IARI New Delhi displays its own varieties including Pusa Lalima i.e. one of the colour varieties.
While a total of 10 farmers societies and individuals are displaying more than 100 varieties on each stall in the Mango Festival.
Some of the varieties of mangoes are like – Arunika, Ambika, Sansesan, Tomy, Fajali, Langra, Lucknowa Safeda, Kachcha Meetha, Dudhiya Gola, Matka Gola, Safeda Amin, Desi Kism, Desi Gola, Desi TUHARU, Munjar Amin, Kism Azad, Gulab Khas, Gulab Jamun, Dashari, Amrpali, Hathi jhool, Malika, Chausa.
