NTPC Mining Limited (NML) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (CSIR-IMMT) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on research and development in the field of critical minerals, mineral processing, and sustainable mining technologies.

The MoU was formally signed by Naveen Jain, CEO, NML & RED (Mining), NTPC, and Dr. Ramanuj Narayan, Director, CSIR-IMMT. The signing ceremony was coordinated by Dr. Kali Sanjay, Head of the Hydro, Bio & Electrometallurgy Department and Business Development, CSIR-IMMT; Dhananjay Shrikhande, General Manager (Technical Services & Commercial); and Anil Kumar Soni, Additional General Manager (Technical Services & Business Development), NTPC Mining Limited.

On the occasion, Naveen Jain said, “This collaboration aligns with our vision to become a benchmark organization in safe, sustainable, and efficient mining through technological excellence and environmental stewardship. By leveraging NTPC Mining’s operational expertise and CSIR-IMMT’s cutting-edge R&D capabilities, we aim to accelerate advancements in mine planning, mineral beneficiation, and sustainable mine closure practices.”

Dr. Ramanuj Narayan said, “This partnership comes at a crucial time as India intensifies efforts under the National Critical Minerals Mission. NTPC Mining’s strategic diversification into the critical minerals sector complements our mandate to provide science-led, scalable, and industry-relevant solutions. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration.”

Since its inception in 2018, NTPC Mining Limited has emerged as a significant contributor to India’s energy security, having produced over 134 million tonnes of coal and fulfilling nearly 15% of NTPC’s coal requirement in FY 2024–25. As India transitions toward clean energy, NML is expanding its portfolio into the exploration and development of critical minerals, both domestically and internationally, in alignment with the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

CSIR-IMMT, with decades of experience in minerals and materials research and technology commercialization, plays a pivotal role in developing innovative solutions for the mining sector. As part of the newly established partnership, an NTPC Mining delegation visited CSIR-IMMT’s advanced technology development facilities and held deliberations focused on collaborative R&D in critical mineral technologies vital for the realization of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.

This MoU marks a significant milestone in fostering innovation-driven, sustainable resource development in India.
