The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology at Manipal Tata Medical College (MTMC) hosted an innovative one-day workshop titled “Comprehensive Training Workshop on Medicolegal Autopsy and Firearm Injuries for Police Officers.” This groundbreaking initiative aimed to enhance the investigative skills of law enforcement officers in critical areas of forensic science.
The workshop, attended by 30 police officers, provided specialized training in medicolegal autopsy, firearm injury interpretation, asphyxia case investigation, and crime scene analysis. To ensure hands-on learning, four artificial crime scenes were meticulously recreated in the college’s state-of-the-art Skills Lab, offering participants an immersive, real-world experience.
Kumar Shivashish, SP-City, Jamshedpur, emphasized the importance of evidence collection for successful convictions and lauded MTMC’s efforts in organizing the workshop. He proposed continued collaborations to empower the police force further and applauded the hands-on training that would enable participants to become trainers in their respective units.
Three forensic experts, Dr. Vijay Kautilya (Associate Dean & Head of Forensic Medicine), Dr. Jyotish Guria, and Dr. Daideepya Bhargava, led the workshop under the guidance of Dr. Pradeep Kumar G, the Dean of MTMC. Their expertise provided participants with valuable insights into both theoretical and practical aspects of forensic investigation.
Rishabh Trivedi, a 2022 batch IPS officer, actively participated, highlighting the importance of bridging forensic science and law enforcement for effective crime resolution.
Dr. Vijay Kautilya expressed, “Effective crime investigation and evidence collection require the seamless integration of forensic science, forensic medicine, and police services. MTMC is committed to community service and will continue organizing hands-on training workshops to strengthen crime investigation capabilities.”
The training focused on firearm injuries, enabling officers to interpret ballistic evidence and reconstruct crime scenes with precision. Participants praised the workshop for its interactive methodologies and real-world applications.
"This initiative reflects MTMC’s dedication to fostering collaboration between forensic science and law enforcement, significantly contributing to improved criminal justice outcomes and community safety," said an official.
