Punjab Government, in a heartfelt tribute to the valiant heroes of India’s freedom struggle, has requested the Centre to issue commemorative coins in honour of the state’s legendary martyrs. Punjab Freedom Fighters Minister Mohinder Bhagat on Sunday said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Government of India to recognize the sacrifices of Punjab’s brave sons through this national tribute.
Highlighting Punjab’s unparalleled contribution to the independence movement, the Chief Minister’s letter recalled the supreme sacrifices of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Sukhdev, Shaheed Rajguru, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Lala Lajpat Rai, and Shaheed Udham Singh — names that remain etched in the nation’s collective memory.
Bhagat said that Punjab’s soil, soaked with the blood of martyrs, deserves a fitting tribute, and the issuance of commemorative coins would serve as a powerful educational and inspirational legacy for future generations. He suggested that such coins could be unveiled on national occasions like Independence Day or Republic Day, symbolizing the nation's respect and gratitude.
Expressing optimism, Bhagat expressed hope that the Centre would respond positively to this appeal, thereby immortalizing Punjab’s immense contribution to India's freedom struggle through this historic gesture.
