Ramlila set to begin in South Delhi

Monday, 22 September 2025 | Pioneer News Service

After a long hiatus, a major Ramlila performance is set to begin today in South Delhi, drawing attention not only for the theatrical return of the epic but also for the prominent political figures backing the event.

The Shri Ram Dharmik Ramlila Samiti, a newly formed committee comprising influential local figures, will stage the performance at a 2-acre DDA park located on Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, adjacent to Bluebells School.

The committee is chaired by former Delhi BJP President and MLA Satish Upadhyay, with a leadership team that includes several other political leaders. Vice Chairpersons include Greater Kailash MLA Shikha Roy and Kasturba Nagar MLA  Neeraj Basoya.

The event will see BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj as a special guest, and will be officially inaugurated by VHP International President Alok Kumar tomorrow at 7 PM.

Additionally, Rajkumar Gupta and Suresh Sharma will be the Chief Patrons and a team of 100 patrons, office bearers, and advisors will work together to ensure the success of this Ramlila.

Organisers say the goal is to create a “model Ramlila” for the region. Committee chairman Satish Upadhyay stated that the committee worked hard to secure the prime location, aiming to make it a yearly tradition.

He also highlighted the community-focused aspects, mentioning the inclusion of a food bazaar and amusement rides.

Special attention will be paid to public safety and convenience. The inaugural evening will begin with a Ganesh Puja performed by Alok Kumar and the first performance will be the ‘Narad Moh Leela’.

The Ramlila itself will be staged by the Gill Art Production troupe, promising a modern take on the traditional performance with the use of digital technology.

Committee President Bharat Jain noted that invitations have been extended to senior leaders from across Delhi and India, suggesting the event’s broader political and social significance.

With a team of over 100 patrons, office bearers, and advisors, the organisers are focusing on ensuring the event’s success.

The Ramlila is scheduled to run from September 22, coinciding with the first day of Navratri. Its return is being welcomed by residents who have missed such a large-scale cultural event in the area.
