Renowned environmentalist and Ramon Magsaysay Award recipient Rajendra Singh expressed grave concerns about the drying rivers of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a. Water harvesting unit at the Manas Bhawan in the state capitals Singh blamed rampant development for the river crisis.
Often referred to as the 'Waterman of India,' Singh highlighted the alarming condition of the Betwa River, which has not had natural flow for three years. He stated, "Bhopal and Madhya Pradesh are cherished by the divine, but our development has drained our rivers."
The event also marked the tribute to late minister Savita Bajpai. Singh underscored the importance of efficient use of the newly established rainwater harvesting unit.
With a roof area of 10,000 sq ft and an annual rainfall of approximately 1,100 mm, the unit is set to collect 10 million litres of rainwater. This will be used to recharge groundwater levels.
Mayor Malti Rai and other dignitaries attended the ceremony, reflecting on the legacy of Savita Bajpai. Rai shared a personal tribute, stressing the importance of continuing Bajpai's vision for public service.
