Terror Strikes Again in Amritsar: Police Checkpoint Targeted in Latest Blast

Tuesday, 04 February 2025 | Monika Malik | Chandigarh

In a shocking act of terror, Punjab has once again become the target of a violent grenade blast — this time striking a police checkpoint in Fatehgarh Churian, located near the busy Amritsar bypass. The attack, which occurred on Monday evening, marked the 11th bomb blast in the state in recent months targeting police establishments, fueling growing concerns about the alarming rise of terrorist activities in the region. This brazen assault took place at a time when the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav was on a crucial tour of Pathankot district to review security measures along the state’s volatile border districts.

The explosion, which could have resulted in devastating casualties, fortunately caused no injuries. Early reports suggested that two militants on a motorcycle launched a grenade at the police post before fleeing the scene. The explosion sent shockwaves across the region, triggering panic among locals.

The grenade, reportedly hurled from a bridge above, exploded inside the post, further adding to the terror. Police tried to chase the assailants but failed to capture them. Eyewitnesses stated that the police officers, frightened by the attack, locked the police post and fled the spot. Authorities have yet to issue any statement on the incident.

With no group claiming responsibility as of now, authorities are left grappling with the possibility of foreign-backed terrorists orchestrating this attack. Security concerns have been heightened in the area following the blast. A large number of police personnel, including senior officers, later arrived at the site to investigate the matter. Forensic teams are conducting a thorough examination of the area, but authorities have remained tight-lipped, neither confirming nor denying suspicions about the nature of the attack.

Investigation agencies suspected that the attack may have been carried out by associates of Khalistani terrorist Happy Passia, also known as Jeevan Fauji, who is based abroad. This group has been behind several similar attacks on police posts and stations in Punjab, and recent arrests by Punjab Police have linked several of their associates to previous bombings.

Following a series of terrorist attacks targeting police stations, instructions were issued to increase security across all police posts and stations in the state. In response, the walls of police stations, especially in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur, are being raised to enhance security.

The incident occurred amid escalating tensions in Punjab, where multiple terrorist attacks have taken place in the last few months. Experts believed that these attacks are orchestrated by groups operating from across the border, with support from foreign-based operatives. There are also growing fears that these attacks could be part of a larger strategy to destabilize the region and ignite communal tensions.

Recent Terrorist Attacks in Punjab

This latest explosion added to a worrying pattern of attacks targeting police stations across the state. In recent months, Punjab has been rocked by a series of grenade explosions and bombings, including incidents at police stations in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Moga.

On November 24, RDX was found planted near Ajnala police station, though it did not explode. On November 27, a grenade attack took place at a closed police station in Gurbakhsh Nagar. On December 2, a grenade blast occurred at Kathgarh police station, with three terrorists arrested. On December 4, a grenade explosion was reported at Majitha police station, but the police initially dismissed it as a non-terrorist incident. On December 13, a grenade blast rocked Aliwal Batalia police station, with the responsibility claimed by Pak-based terrorist Happy Passian.

On December 17, the Islamabad police station was attacked with a grenade, which was confirmed by Punjab DGP as a terrorist incident. On January 19, a blast occurred at the Gumatala police station in Amritsar, claimed by Babbbar Khalsa International.

This growing wave of terrorist activity is worrying authorities, with intelligence reports pointing to increased cross-border infiltration by militants. The use of drones to drop weapons and explosives is a rising concern, further complicating security operations along Punjab's border.

In response to the attacks, Punjab Police have stepped up surveillance, with increased security measures being implemented across key areas. The State Government has emphasized the importance of coordination between state and central agencies to tackle the terrorist-gangster nexus believed to be behind many of these attacks.
