Top leaders campaign ahead of Delhi Assembly polls

Saturday, 25 January 2025 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

With Delhi assembly elections nearing, leaders from all three political parties- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) - held multiple rallies, roadshows and public meetings across the national capital.

Addressing a public meeting in support of BJP candidate Parvesh Verma from the New Delhi Assembly seat, Former Union Minister and BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Friday launched a scathing attack on the ruling AAP, calling it a “mahila virodhi” (anti-women) party.  Thakur accused the AAP government of neglecting women's welfare.

“They promised to give Rs 1,000 to women but failed to deliver. The AAP-DA government also summoned Swati Maliwal to the chief minister's residence and got her assaulted. They also ignored the plight of ASHA workers by not fulfilling the promise to increase their salaries,” Thakur said.

He further criticised the AAP government, saying, “Atishi is the Chief Minister of Delhi, but their anti-women stance is evident as her face is missing from posters and hoardings. "On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched transformative schemes such as ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' from Haryana, leading to significant positive changes.”

In another public meeting, Thakur took a dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of ‘double-dating,' and questioned why the Congress remains "silent" on issues like AAP's alleged corruption and support for illegal activities when it comes to Rohingya Muslims or unauthorised settlements, he said, adding this clearly shows that Kejriwal and Gandhi are double-dating.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also participated in a public meeting organized in support of BJP candidate from Patel Nagar assembly constituency, Raaj Kumar Anand at Ramjas Maidan in Patel Nagar.

"Recently elections were also held in Haryana where a lot of people from Uttarakhand stay. I participated in several public rallies in Haryana as well, and people there helped the BJP form the government for the third consecutive time. I also went to Maharashtra where people helped BJP win again, and a double-engine government was formed. Therefore, I urge you all to help lotus (BJP's symbol) bloom in Delhi," he said, while addressing a large gathering.

"People of Delhi are ready for a change this time. Whatever schemes we make or whatever we promise in our manifesto, is our vision statement and we make it after properly analysing all aspects. Congress and AAP just make false promises. We will implement all those schemes that are not currently functional in Delhi," Dhami asserted.

Meanwhile, speaking at a poll rally in Najafgarh, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal said, "Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath came to Delhi yesterday, and asked people to vote for BJP. I want to ask him - for how hours is electricity available in Uttar Pradesh? In Lucknow and Noida, you can see eight and nine hours of power cuts, respectively. I want to ask you - how can we vote for you?" Kejriwal also held two more public meetings in Uttam Nagar and Dwarka.

Congress leader Sachin Pilot also addressed a public gathering in Madipur. "When Congress was in power in Delhi, development happened. Many used to compare the development of their cities to Delhi and say Delhi is more developed. Both the parties (AAP and BJP) have wasted their time in blaming each other. Neither the Centre nor state government cared about Delhi," he stated.
