The Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI), supported by the Ministry of Steel, launched three R&D schemes and a web portal at “Catalyzing R&D in the Indian Steel Sector” in New Delhi on March 12, 2025.
Minister of State for Steel & Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma inaugurated the initiatives, emphasizing their role in innovation and sustainability as India targets 300 million tonnes of steel capacity by 2030. The SRTMI web portal will facilitate industry-wide collaboration and idea exchange.
The event saw participation from major steel companies, IITs, research organizations, startups, and global entities. Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik highlighted India’s rising steel demand and the need for research in plant efficiency, AI/ML, and decarbonization. SAIL Chairman Amarendu Prakash stressed industry-academia collaboration, while SRTMI Director Neha Verma introduced SteelCollab, a platform for driving innovation.
