Public health institutions in Bhopal will mark World Liver Day on Saturday, with screening camps and awareness drives themed Food is Medicine this year.
Educational sessions and consultations will focus on liver-friendly diets and lifestyle changes. Camps will screen for high blood pressure, diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease to promote early detection.
Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Prabhakar Tiwari said the liver plays a crucial role in overall health. Programmes are already underway to monitor and prevent non-communicable diseases linked to liver dysfunction.
The events will also raise awareness about preventing viral hepatitis and infections. Health workers will offer detailed advice on dietary habits, food safety, and preventive measures.
Ayurveda, India’s traditional system of medicine, has long emphasised the liver’s central role in metabolism and detoxification. Herbs like bhumyamalaki, katuki and kalmegh are commonly used in Ayurvedic formulations to support liver function and treat disorders like fatty liver and jaundice.
Similarly, Unani and Siddha systems also highlight dietary moderation and seasonal cleansing to protect the liver. Practitioners in these systems recommend foods like turmeric, amla and ghee in small quantities for their rejuvenating and protective properties.
The Health Department’s initiative reflects a growing recognition of ancient wisdom in modern wellness frameworks. By aligning public health messages with traditional practices, officials hope to foster better understanding and adoption of preventive measures.
World Liver Day serves as a reminder that healthy eating is not just a choice but a powerful step towards long-term liver health and overall wellbeing.
