In a remark that has stirred Karnataka’s already simmering political cauldron, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s son, Yathindra, has said his father is in the “final phase” of his political career and should play the role of a margdarshak (mentor) to Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi. The statement has reignited speculation over leadership transition within the Congress in the state.
Speaking at an event in Belagavi, attended by Jarkiholi, Yathindra — an MLC — said, “My father is in the final phase of his political career. At this stage, he should mentor leaders with a progressive mindset and strong ideology. Satish Jarkiholi embodies these values and can uphold the Congress ideology effectively.”
Yathindra later clarified that he was not hinting at succession but merely echoing his father’s earlier assertion that he would not contest elections after 2028. “He believes in social justice and secularism, and Jarkiholi shares those ideals. My point was that he can guide young leaders with such principles,” he explained.
However, political observers believe Yathindra’s statement was a calculated message aimed at the camp of Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, subtly signalling that the future leadership could remain aligned with Siddaramaiah’s faction.
The Congress high command has so far downplayed persistent talk of a leadership change. Siddaramaiah himself has repeatedly asserted, “I will be Chief Minister for the full five-year term.”
Deputy CM Shivakumar, when asked about Yathindra’s comments, responded, “You have to ask him about what he said. Siddaramaiah and I have made it clear we will follow the high command’s decisions and continue working together.”
