Sushila Karki Sworn In as Nepal’s First Female Prime Minister Amid Turmoil

Post major Gen Z uprising against corruption, Sushila Karki, Nepal’s former Chief Justice, has been sworn in as the country’s interim Prime Minister, marking a historic first as she becomes Nepal’s first woman to hold the post. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the presence of President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President Ram Sahay Yadav, and Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Rawat.

Karki's appointment comes at a time of political crisis following the resignation of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. His departure was triggered by nationwide protests led by frustrated youth demanding accountability, jobs, and an end to corruption. The protests, driven largely by Generation Z activists, turned violent, resulting in at least 51 deaths after a severe police crackdown.

After days of intense negotiations, a consensus was reached between President Paudel, Nepal Army chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, and protest leaders. The decision to appoint Karki as interim PM reflects an effort to stabilize the country and prepare for new elections, which have been scheduled for March 5, 2026.

Sushila Karki, known for her unyielding stance on corruption during her tenure as Nepal’s first female Chief Justice (2016–2017), is seen by many, especially young Nepalese, as a symbol of integrity. Her time in office was turbulent—she faced an impeachment motion widely viewed as politically motivated, which was ultimately withdrawn amid public backlash.

Before her appointment, other prominent figures like Kulman Ghising and Kathmandu mayor Balendra Shah were considered. However, Karki emerged as the consensus candidate due to her independent track record and broad public respect.

With a challenging transition ahead, Karki’s leadership is expected to focus on reform, accountability, and preparing the country for fair and peaceful elections.
