Our Take

Churn in TN politics

Churn in TN politics

Since monochrome days, film and politics have been in the mainstream of Tamil Nadu's public life. A large part of the State's population hero-worships film stars and politicians as role models to aspire to. This twin obsession of Tamil Nadu has seen many from the film industry join politics in the State and it was the DMK which first used the power of cinema to spread its political message.

After the passing away of J Jayalalithaa, ailing former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi is the tallest figure left who made the transition from reel to real; Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan though huge film stars are as yet untested politically. Karunanidhi, with his contributions to shaping Tamil films as a scriptwriter of renown, Tamil society and politics for over 60 years has been a trailblazer. But politics is the State is yet again in the throes of uncertainty as concern around Karunanidhi’s health condition grows. He, along with MGR, were the original titans battling it out in the fierce arena of Dravidian politics but it was the DMK patriarch who could move the masses through his considerable oratorical skills which earned him the sobriquet 'Kalaignar'.

The animosity and vindictiveness that has been a hallmark of Tamil Nadu politics, however, continues even with MGR and Jayalalithaa gone and Kalaignar not active in day-to-day politics anymore. It is governance which has always suffered in this comparatively developed State when compared to others in India. The new political players in Tamil Nadu across both the Dravidian parties are waging their own internecine battles of attrition, though, so more of the same may be expected.
