Sanskaari trolls and Swara
It's confusing almost! You’re told to not have sex. But who knew that this translated into ‘don’t think of any form of satisfaction’. Clearly, when ‘matters’ are being taken into your own hands, shaming is the only climax you’re reaching. Swara Bhaskar being called names because of her role in the movie Veere Di Wedding is a clear indication of the regressive mindset people still carry. Trolling artistes for playing “bold” roles has actually become a trend. What these name callers need to do is take a second and realize that all Swara was doing was playing a role in a movie, which in no way is an indication of how she is in real life. That being said, in this case, the topic of discussion is female masturbation, a concept as unreal as unicorns to some. It’s not only Swara who needs to be defended against these tags but the actual concept her character is trying to put out there. It's real and its about time people know that it is. This movie's strong and forward looking plot was the perfect way to put it out there. Cinema is supposed to be a reflection of society. One element of cinema talks about exposing reality. That's exactly what Veere Di Wedding was doing.
Actresses like Swara who stand for what they believe in are part of the much needed change in the industry of bringing about realism. Isn’t it time to enter a movie theatre with an open mind actually come out being with the times?
“It’s 2018” is an excuse for a lot of things being done nowadays, but when it actually comes to being progressive, it seems we’re still stuck in the 1900s where a song was how every little taboo was concealed and a stroke on the face was as erotic as a movie could get. The “I’m Hindustani” troll tweet is a sanskaari shield from anything explicit for adults who themselves have 5 children? How about next time, to avoid being embarrassed, avoid watching adult movies with grandparents as another troller did and complained about! And do keep in mind, the world is more than what you've seen.
