Two lynched on suspicion of being child-lifters in Assam

A mob in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district have beaten to death two youths on suspicion that they were child-abductors.

Police have arrested five persons for their alleged involvement in the crime even as search is on to trace others involved in the incident.

The horrific incident took place at remote Kathilangsho area under Dokmoka police station in the Central Assam district on Friday night, police said that no one has been arrested so far regarding the incident but investigation is on to book the culprits.

“The two youth from Guwahati , identified as Nilotpal Das Abhijeet Nath had gone to Kathilangso waterfall area under Dengaon area under Dokmoka police station in the district. It was late evening and seeing two youths, the locals suspected them to be child abductors and started grilling them,” police said adding that although the youths tried to convince the mob that they were not child abductors, there was no takers for their appeal.

“The mob grew soon and they attacked the youths with bamboo sticks and beat them till arrival of the police. IT was too late when we arrived and the duo succumbed to their injuries,” said the Police.

It may be mentioned here that the incident took place at a time when rumours doing the rounds in social media that some group of chilkd abductors are kidnapping child of different age group in Dimapur in Nagaland and its adjoining areas.

Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has condemned the killing of the two youth and ordered a high level probe into the incident and circumstances that led to the incident. The Assam government also rushed state’s Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Mukesh Agarwala to take stock of the situation.

Assam DGP Kuladhar Saikia said that police have arrested five persons so far in this connection. “We are going to fast track the investigation,” Saikia said.

The Leader of the Opposition, Assam Legislative Assembly, Sri Debabrata Saikia, today condemned the lynching of two Guwahati based youths, Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath, at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong last evening and called for a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Terming the murders as another instance of the State Government’s utter failure to maintain law and order, Assam Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia expressed concern at the inaction of the local administration even though it is reported that rumours of child-lifters had been rife in the area for quite some time.

He called for a thorough probe into the negligent attitude of the civil and police administration and initiation of strict action for their failure to prevent the unfortunate incident.
