‘Hannah Wasn’t the Only One’

With the release of the much-awaited trailer of 13 Reasons Why season 2, we are already piqued about the conflicted world of young adults

Netflix has released a trailer for the second season of 13 Reasons Why, which will start in the wake of Hannah’s death as the characters all work towards healing. But as the teaser also reveals “the tapes were just the beginning.”

The beauty of season 1 was in the editing...the timeline was distorted in order to recreate those ‘instances’ in her life that led to her death, we observe, she narrates...it was a very clever mechanism that kept us on our toes. 13 Reasons Why Season 1 did a really good job focussing on the competitive culture and frustrations that teenagers go through on a daily occurrence in high school, as well as the secrets they keep from their parents and each other, it became a point of debate.

Social impact

The series created debate over its depiction of suicide and self-hurt, making Netflix add solid warning notices before the main, twelfth, and thirteenth scenes. School clinicians and instructors raised an alert about the arrangement. The teachers and staff of schools supposedly told guardians that their schools had seen an expansion in self-destructive and self-hurt conduct from understudies and that a portion of those understudies “have explained the relationship of their self-destructive behaviour to 13 Reasons Why Netflix arrangement.”

In April 2017, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) in the United States released a statement regarding the series, saying, “Research shows that exposure to another person’s suicide, or to graphic or sensationalised accounts of death, can be one of the many risk factors that youth struggling with mental health conditions cite as a reason they contemplate or attempt suicide.” NASP sent a letter to school mental health professionals across the country about the series, reportedly a first for NASP in response to a television show.

Here’s the official synopsis for Season 2

13 Reasons Why continues in the aftermath of Hannah’s death and the start of our characters’ complicated journeys toward healing and recovery. Liberty High prepares to go on trial, but someone will stop at nothing to keep the truth surrounding Hannah’s death concealed. A series of ominous polaroids lead Clay and his classmates to uncover a sickening secret and a conspiracy to cover it up.”

Here’s what we know about 13 Reasons Why Season 2

We’ll see others’ perspectives on Hannah’s story and Jessica’s story will proceed as she tries to recoup and come back to ordinary life. Though there will be a storyteller but it won’t be Hannah – no more tapes. The season will explore “ the way we raise boys into men and the way we treat girls and women in our culture – and what we could do better in both cases.” Bryce will ideally get what’s coming for him.

Season 2 will answer all the questions left at the end of season 1 including “How will Jessica heal in the aftermath of her assault? Will Bryce be brought to justice? How will Clay move on from the devastation that immersed him in grief with Hannah’s death? What happened to Alex? What decisions will Tyler make?

Mark your calendars, gather your loved ones and get ready for 13 more episodes of Clay and company.

13 Reasons Why Season 2 premieres Friday, May 18th on Netflix.
