Liquor consumption in illegal ahatas in Indore district

Monday, 29 April 2024 | PNS | INDORE

About 180 liquor shops in Indore district have been auctioned for around Rs 1700 crore for the financial year 2024 - 2025. At present, there are 180 composite country made and foreign liquor shops and about 120  bars in Indore district.

Madhya Pradesh government has given permission to run shops and to sell liquor from the shops and drinking in and around shops is banned as the government  has not given permission to for shop bars or ahatas where the drinkers can sit and drink.

But it is commonly seen that drinkers at most of the liquor shops in Indore district  are drinking liquor fearlessly and openly while sitting in front back and side of the liquor shops.  At many shops the shop owner has constructed the permanent structure with tin roofs adjacent to the shops  where the drinkers are drinking liquor.

The biggest problem is  at shops located besides Indore Rau road, that is Rajendra  Nagar shop, Reti Mandi shop, shop near best price , Rau Square shop and Tejaji Nagar shop. There is a large crowd of people drinking liquor at these shops right from the morning, which continues till late night. People drinking liquor sit in front  and around these shops and drink liquor in groups .

Liquor is smuggled from these shops on two-wheelers and four-wheelers but the Indore excise department don't take any action. When The Pioneer tried to contact  Indore excise controller Ram Hans Pachoury his phone was busy.
