High level health facilities are available in AIIMS Bhopal. One such method is Ayurveda. Shirodhara is a healing method in Ayurveda, which originated in India thousands of years ago. It focuses on rebalancing the life forces, called doshas, in the patient's body.

One such story is of 46 year old Naman (name changed). Who was not able to sleep properly at night for the last 6 years. The whole night was spent tossing and turning. Also took sleeping pills. But till the time the medicine is continued, it is fine, but later again the same old story. Later, he visited the OPD in the AYUSH department of AIIMS Bhopal.

Dr Danish Javed advised him to get Shirodhara done. After only one month of treatment, there was a significant change in the patient's condition. After almost 3 months of treatment, Naman now sleeps peacefully at night.

Shirodhara is an Ayurvedic treatment technique in which medicated oil, milk or buttermilk is dropped on the patient's forehead. Shirodhara is made up of two Sanskrit words - Shiro (head) and Dhara (flow).

This involves pouring liquid - usually oil, milk, buttermilk, or water - on the patient's forehead. It is often combined with body, scalp or head massage. Oil, milk or buttermilk processed from herbs is put in a vessel which has a small hole in the middle and from the same hole the oil is dropped on the forehead (between the two eye-brows). To protect the eyes it, it is covered with a bandage. Shirodhara has a relaxing, soothing and calming effect on the body and mind.

Research also shows that Shirodhara reduces fatigue, is beneficial in sleep problems, relieves headache, reduces stress, anxiety and depression, improves concentration and helps in reducing blood pressure. In the last one month alone, about 70 patients took advantage of it.
