Wednesday, 03 April 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, spent a restless first night in his 14x8 feet cell in Delhi’s Tihar Jail, with him pacing up and down his cell while sleeping for a few hours. He slept on a cement platform for some time and was seen walking in his cell late in the night, according to sources.

“He talked to his wife through video conferencing today. He is having home cooked food and being given the medicines. He looks fine and is reading books in jail,” a prison official said.

The AAP supremo arrived in Tihar Jail in the afternoon at 4 pm on Monday. Upon his arrival, he was first medically examined before being sent to his cell. According to sources, “Soon after arriving at the jail, Kejriwal did meditation for an hour and after that he slept well. So far he has not complained about anything.”

Kejriwal, who is the first sitting CM to be lodged at Asia’s largest prison, was given tea in the afternoon with two biscuits and was served home-cooked food for dinner, a source said on Tuesday. He has been lodged in Jail number 2 in Tihar. As per Tihar sources, he was given a mosquito net as per the jail manual for prisoners lodged in the jail. As per sources, the AAP leader woke up early on Tuesday morning, and was served breakfast consisting of bread and tea at 6.40 am after which he did meditation and Yoga for around 90 minutes.

The AAP convenor is staying alone in his cell and was given a mattress, blankets and two pillows. “He slept on a cement platform at night. Later, he paced across the cell. In the morning, his sugar levels remained low. He is allowed to have home-cooked food for lunch and dinner and it will be served daily, till his sugar level comes to normal,” the doctors said.

Kejriwal’s sugar level has been low and he is under the watch of Tihar jail doctors, prison officials said. He is allowed to have home-cooked food for lunch and dinner and it will be served daily, till his sugar level comes back to normal, they said.

As he is a diabetic patient, Kejirwal has been allowed to have medicines. Authorities have kept one glucometer, a medical device for determining the concentration of glucose in the blood, inside his cell along with some toffees in case his sugar levels fluctuate. The CM has also been provided with a chair and table inside his 14 feet by 8 feet size of cell.

Lunch was served to him around 12 noon, according to sources. However, it is unclear whether it was home-cooked or from the jail.

According to the sources, Kejriwal has been kept in isolation in the prison due to his high-level of threat perception following which four guards have been stationed outside his barrack 24X7 including two personnel from Tihar Jail Security and a jail warder. Jail authorities are keeping a watch on him through the CCTV cameras, while a quick reaction team has also been deployed near his cell.

Ramayana, Mahabharata, and ‘How Prime Ministers Decide’ by Neerja Chowdhury have been provided to the CM which he had requested from the court. He has also been allowed a religious locket that he wears as per his request.

Additionally, as per the rules, Kejriwal has given a list of six people whom he would like to meet. The list includes his wife Sunita Kejriwal, their son and daughter, his private secretary Bibhav Kumar and AAP general secretary (organisation) Sandeep Pathak.
