Jharkhand has long been known for its rich mineral resources and vibrant culture. However, in recent years, it has also emerged as a significant player in the country's export landscape.
Jharkhand has made a remarkable leap in its export performance. As per Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) data, in 2024-25, Jharkhand exported goods and services a worth whooping ?16,644 crore (USD 1.90 billion). The state’s rank in India’s export list has improved dramatically — from 21st position in 2020-21 to 17th in 2024-25 — a rise driven in large part by the contribution from Adani Power Plant in Godda.
The standout commodity which earned Jharkhand maximum forex is electrical energy, which alone accounted for 43% of the state's total exports. In 2024-25, the state exported electricity worth or $813 million to Bangladesh, also its biggest trading partner. This achievement has put Godda as the top exporting district in the state, contributing 43% of Jharkhand’s total exports. Capital Ranchi comes second, contributing 15% of the state’s exports.
The Adani Power’s Godda Plant remains the single largest private sector investment in the state since its formation. Commissioned in 2023 at a capital cost of almost $2 billion, it is country’s only transnational power plant, supplying its entire output to neighboring Bangladesh, earning precious foreign exchange. The Godda plant is more than just an electricity producer — it is a growth catalyst for the region. Its operations have generated thousands of jobs, upgraded infrastructure, and strengthened local communities through CSR programs in healthcare, education, and women’s empowerment.
Jharkhand’s export basket is not limited to electricity. Other major commodities exported from the state in 2024-25 include Iron & Steel and their products (28%) and auto components (8%). Of destinations, after Bangladesh, it is US and Nepal which are Jharkhand’s top export destinations, both accounting for around 7% of its exports. Mexico, UAE, and China come next, contributing 3-5%. Each of these countries represents a unique market with distinct demands, and Jharkhand's ability to cater to these markets speaks volumes about its export strategies.
The story of Jharkhand's export journey is not just about numbers and statistics. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people involved in various sectors, from mining and manufacturing to logistics and trade. It is about the strategic decisions made by policymakers and business leaders to harness the state's potential and position it as a key player in the global market.
As Jharkhand continues to grow and evolve, its export story serves as an inspiration for other states and regions. It demonstrates that with the right strategies, innovation, and determination, even regions with historical challenges can emerge as significant contributors to the global economy. The future looks promising for Jharkhand, and its export journey is a shining example of what can be achieved with vision and perseverance.
