Adani plans over Rs 1 lakh crore investment in West Bengal by 2035

On Thursday, Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani announced plans to invest over Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035.
Speaking at the foundation ceremony for a 2,000-bed hospital in New Town near Kolkata, alongside Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Adani stated the group will invest Rs 4,000 crore in the multi-speciality Adani Arogya Mandir. The project is expected to generate 10,000 jobs.
Adani said that half of the beds at the not-for-profit hospital will be reserved for economically weaker sections eligible under State and Union health insurance schemes. The facility will also include a medical college, along with research and care infrastructure.
“We expect to invest over Rs 1 lakh crore in West Bengal by 2035,” Adani said. He added that the investment will cover ports, logistics, power generation, transmission and distribution, roads, bridges, ropeways, green cement, and hyperscale data centres.
This marks the first formal announcement of the Adani Group’s proposal to invest in power distribution, a sector currently monopolised by the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group through CESC Ltd in Kolkata and Howrah.
CESC Ltd supplies power to Kolkata and Howrah, while the rest of West Bengal, including Salt Lake and New Town, is served by the State-owned WBSEDCL.
Explaining the rationale for the infrastructure investment, Adani stated that ports strengthen logistics, which attracts industry. Industry drives manufacturing, which requires energy, and energy supports digital infrastructure. He added that jobs multiply as this chain develops.
Adani described West Bengal as India’s natural maritime and logistics bridge to Northeast India and Southeast Asia. He stated that the State has the potential to become one of Asia’s greatest integrated industrial and economic platforms.
He also announced the group’s support for restoring the Writers’ Building, revitalising Kumartuli Ghat, and promoting Kolkata’s Durga Puja internationally. Adani referred to Mundra Port in Gujarat as the group’s first karmabhoomi (land where one works) and expressed hope that West Bengal would become its second. He added that he visited the Kalighat Temple earlier in the day and prayed for strength to lead, the will to dream, and the energy to execute. He added that West Bengal’s progress would contribute to “India’s momentum”.
CM Adhikari on Thursday said the State Government was working closely with the Adani Group to reshape the State’s industrial and healthcare landscape.
Adhikari explained that after becoming CM in May, he requested Adani to invest in the State. He also urged Adani to help revive the state’s industrial sector, and Adani assured him of full support, the CM said.
“This is a historic day. The facility will be a super-speciality hospital and a centre for medical education and research. It will help train future doctors and benefit the eastern and northeastern regions,” he said.
Adhikari said that the campus will eventually develop into a fully integrated healthcare city, featuring residential facilities for students, hostels, staff quarters, and advanced infrastructure and utility systems.
He added that the facility is expected to attract medical tourists from northeastern states and neighbouring countries.
