Central Electricity Authority partners with BSES to organise All-India electrical safety awareness programme

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Power, Government of India, in association with BSES discoms, organised Electrical Safety Day 2026 in New Delhi recently. The programme brought together over 1,300 delegates from the power, safety, fire services, industry, RWAs and consumer groups. The event was live-streamed on YouTube and has so far generated over 76,000 views. This year’s theme, “Today’s Awareness, Tomorrow’s Prevention: Let Us All Unite to Prevent Fire Hazards from Electrical Short Circuits”, carried a clear message — electrical safety begins with awareness and everyday responsible behaviour. The programme highlighted that many electrical fires can be prevented through timely inspection, proper maintenance, safe usage, quality equipment and responsible action.
Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal, and Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik, addressed the programme through video messages. They emphasised that electrical safety must become part of everyday life and highlighted the importance of safety check-ups, proper earthing, avoiding overloading and using quality equipment.
The programme was graced by Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA. Also present were Sunil Kumar Jha, Directorate General-Fire Services, Civil Defence & Home Guards; CEA Members A Balan, Praveen Gupta, Hemant Jain and V K Singh; Amal Sinha, Director and Group CEO, BSES; Abhishek Ranjan, CEO, BRPL; and Santosh Kumar, COO, BYPL.
A key highlight was the launch of two safety publications — ‘Vidyut Suraksha Bodh’, an electrical safety handbook for children, and ‘Electrical Fire Safety Book’, a guide on preventing electrical fire hazards and promoting safe use of electricity.
Eminent actor Ashutosh Rana participated in an engaging fireside chat that linked electrical safety with everyday life, discipline and responsibility. Drawing a distinction between Raksha and Suraksha, he said that while Raksha is protection after a crisis, Suraksha is the awareness and discipline that prevent a crisis from occurring. Using examples from ancient India and philosophy, he emphasised that power must always be accompanied by restraint, stability and responsibility. A Nukkad Natak on Safety Best Practices was staged, along with a thematic presentation titled “Fire Speaks – The Journey of Fire”, to make electrical fire safety more relatable.
