Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), the Jharkhand-based subsidiary of Coal India Limited, is committed to conduct mining business by conserving resources and adopting eco-friendly alternatives.

The company has embraced sustainable practices to prioritize environmental consciousness in operation and decision-making processes. Besides, the company has been investing in green technologies and strive to minimize environmental impact throughout its value-chain.

The company is mitigating impacts on air pollution at source while carrying out mining activities by deploying surface miners and transporting mainly through railway rakes to the power plants situated in different states of the country.  

Aligning with global commitment of reducing carbon footprint in phase-wise, CCL has ventured into domain of surface miners for coal mining activities instead of shovel dumber system. These surface miners have eliminated the need of drilling, blasting and crushing of coal, which were considered source for creating pollution. More than 15 surface miners have been deployed in mines of the company for extracting coal in various areas of the company.

Similarly, drilling in mine areas is also believed to create air pollutants. The company showing its commitment towards environment, around 112 numbers of drills are provided with dust extractors / wet drilling technologies.

At mining sites, the company is using mobile sprinklers to control dust particles. Almost, all the opencast mines have large capacity mobile sprinklers. Sixty-one mobile sprinklers of 28 KL capacity have been deployed and now CCL has taken an initiative to procure only mist type of sprinklers which are technologically superior to normal sprinklers. It is to be noted that 22 mist type sprinklers of 28 KL capacity have already been deployed where mining activities are carried out.
Similarly, 27 numbers of trolley mounted fog canons have been deployed for dust suppression.  Installation of 28 number of PM10 analyzers, the advanced air pollution monitoring device that is designed to detect and measure the concentration of air particles.

Along with this, CCL aims to create 425 MW of solar power plants by 2026 for net zero carbon emissions, including 20 MW being built in the Piparwar area. To boost green cover, CCL planted around 231 hectares of land in 2023. In addition, as a novel project, plantation has been carried out in the Rajrappa area using the Miyawaki method.

CCL is not only ensuring energy security to the country but also contributed immensely to bring smile to the grassroot fellow citizens and stakeholders in and around the mines. The company is committed to playing a major role in achieving the Nation’s energy security.
