AAP leader Bharadwaj highlights increasing crime rate in Capital

Wednesday, 08 May 2024 | Staff Reporter | New Delhi

Senior AAP Leader and Cabinet Minister, Saurabh Bharadwaj, highlighted the ever-increasing crime rate in Delhi.  The AAP leader pointed towards the inefficiency of Lieutenant Governor (LG) Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, in handling Delhi’s law and order.

Bharadwaj drew attention to concerning data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), revealing Delhi’s unfortunate distinction as the highest crime-rate city in the nation, coupled with a dismal rate of charge sheets. Expressing dismay at the surge in daylight criminal activities, including henious murders and shootings, the Delhi Minister demanded accountability from the LG.

He accused Saxena of mismanaging the Delhi Police and impeding the efforts of the elected government. Bharadwaj also condemned the removal of safety measures for women, such as bus marshals and helpline services.

Speaking on the issue of increasing crime rates in National Capital, Bhardwaj cited examples of serious crime including a daylight murder in Jafrabad in front of public and a fatal altercation in one of Delhi’s VIP area RK Puram involving a Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) constable. He regretted the low rate of charge sheets, which he argued undermines justice and emboldens criminals.According to Bharadwaj, Delhi’s crime epidemic is a direct consequence of Saxena’s failure to effectively oversee key departments, including the Delhi Police and Delhi Development Authority (DDA). He also criticised the significant increase in police vacancies since 2014 and the reduction in the police budget.

He said that the disproportionately high rate of crimes against women in Delhi, emphasising the need for urgent action to address the issue. He condemned Saxena’s decision to remove bus marshals and dismantle the helpline service, which he believes has worsened the situation.

Bhardwaj alleged the Delhi police for corruption and said that corruption in the police department of Delhi has increased significantly in the last two years. He further said that LG is pointing fingers at the elected government, but his own departments are getting worse day by day.

He called on Saxena to prioritise his responsibilities and refrain from interfering in the work of the elected government. He urged Saxena to focus on improving his own departments and allow the Delhi government to fulfill its mandate effectively.
