MBBS student duped of Rs 6L in cyber fraud

Saturday, 13 April 2024 | PNS | ROURKELA

Despite awareness drives carried out by the enforcement agencies warning people about cyber frauds, many including educated people are still falling prey to cybercriminals in the hope of getting lucrative returns.

In the latest incident, an MBBS girl student was allegedly duped by cyber fraudsters and lost Rs 6 lakh in Rourkela.

The victim received a message on her WhatsApp on March 27 asking her to join a group on a messaging app. After joining the group, which already had 4,000 members, she was forwarded to a smaller group where a person asked her to join another social media site.

A woman then asked her to make an investment of Rs 1,000, promising handsome returns. A total of Rs 1,300 was credited to her account. The girl was asked to invest more, which again earned her a good profit. The fraudsters then messaged her to invest Rs 25,000, but she received no returns this time.

On inquiry, she was instructed to invest more for a huge profit. After having invested Rs 6 lakh, she demanded returns along with the interest but got no response, following which she knew that he has been cheated.
