A liquor trader, who was arrested on the charge of holding large quantities of expired beer in Baleswar district, reportedly made an attempt to end his life in the custody of the Excise Department on Friday.

Naba Kishore Ray, the owner of a licenced liquor shop at Patrapada in Baleswar, had been arrested after the seizure of at least 1,080 cans of expired beer from his possession on Thursday.

The Excise Department had sealed Naba Kishore’s liquor outlet for flouting the rules around a month ago. However, he was allegedly  selling liquor illegally in the locality.

Excise officials had arrested Naba Kishore and one of his employees in connection with the incident before launching a probe in this regard.

Naba Kishore reportedly consumed bleaching powder in a toilet in an attempt to end his life in the custody of the Excise Department.

He was rushed to the Baleswar District Headquarters Hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable.
