5-day Sangeet Mahavidyalaya fest begins today

President Pranab Mukherjee will visit the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya here on November 29 during its Golden Jubilee celebration, which will be held from November 26 to 30.

During his visit, the President would felicitate a total of 18 eminent artists from various fields, informed Mahavidyalaya Principal Dr Tamasarani DasMohapatra at a Press meet here on Tuesday. Besides, 147 alumni of the college would also be felicitated during the five-day extravaganza, she added.

Culture Minister Ashok Panda said that the institute has been given a new look, with addition of some extra features and various modifications, adding that the State Government has given ample financial support for the celebrations.

“The Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, the only institute in the State to offer degree courses in the field of performing art, has spent a total amount of Rs 80 lakh for preparations, including various beautification and renovation works in view of its Golden Jubilee celebrations.  A new Heritage Gate has also been erected at the institute’s premises,” said Culture Secretary Arabinda Padhee.  

The five-day celebrations will start with a Sanskruti Yatra from the Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya to the Rabindra Mandap en route the BDA, the Ram Mandir and the Master Canteen squares in the morning. Culture Minister Ashok Chandra Panda will flag off the foot-march in the presence of Departmental Secretary Arabinda Padhee, Director Sushil Das, Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena, MlA Bijoy Mohanty and MP Prasanna Patsani along with all students of the institute. 

later, CM Naveen Patnaik would inaugurate the event on November 26 evening. On the occasion, he would also inaugurate the Heritage Gate of the institute. Besides, a video documentary on the institute will be released on the first day, informed Principal DasMohapatra.

The event will include two sessions, including a lecture session in the morning and a performance session in the evening. Various cultural programmes, including Odishi, Chhau dance, drama, orchestra, Hindustani vocal music and Talabadya Kachery, etc will be presented by several noted artists in every evening. Nearly, 500 students will participate.
